SITE NEWS: Stat Page Update

Over the last couple days we've uploaded a number of stat updates to Football Outsiders. The biggest news is that 1997 and 2009 defensive stats and penalty totals are now available on the player pages. Check out Ray Lewis for a sample player who has both. Game charting stats for 2009 still aren't fully compiled, but hopefully will come soon.

The other change is that all stat changes for the 2009 season are now incorporated into our DVOA and DYAR stats. There are no major changes in the player stats, but there are a few small changes in the overall DVOA ratings:

  • Baltimore still leads the league, but drops by two percentage points and now ends the year only slightly ahead of Green Bay (2).
  • New England (3) passes Philadelphia (4).
  • New York Jets (9) pass Pittsburgh (10).
  • Jacksonville (23) passes Buffalo (24).

The two Super Bowl teams end the year with the same ranks, but it's nice to see that both teams saw their DVOA ratings rise slightly with the changes.

One change for 2009 in how we handle lateral passes: We've gone through and changed some of these from runs to passes in our data based on information from game charters. If reception totals differ from the official NFL totals for players like Percy Harvin, this may be a reason why. We'll be going back at some point to do the same for 2005-2008.

So you're now differentiating between passes across the field that happen to be backward and a ball-carrier flipping the ball to a teammate behind him?

No, we mean passes from the quarterback that are sideways and happen to be slightly backwards. By NFL rules, those are runs, but we don't feel it makes sense to count a WR screen as a run simply because the receiver took an extra step backwards before catching the ball and ended up behind the quarterback by a few inches.
