Week 8 Open Discussion Thread

Oh, come on. If last week got to 500, this week should hit 600, easy.

Okay, so I don't have anything interesting to say, but some of it may conceivably be.

So, does Favre do the Lambeau Leap after scoring, and what happens if he does?

He doesn't score, so no.

I hope he tries. I don't think anyone's been injured in a lambeau leap before, but there's always a first time for everything. And I hope that when he is introduced, the place just goes stone cold silent. I know it won't happen, but I can hope, right?

Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread

Apparently Cable's ex-wife and one of his former girlfriends (going from memory, so I could be wrong about what exactly their relationships to him were) are saying that he was violent and physically abusive. One said that when they broke up/divorced, she suggested counseling and that made him even angrier (and apparently she was surprised by this--I have a psychology degree and I can tell you that telling anyone they should get any kind of counseling or therapy almost always makes them angry).

Honestly, to NFL peoples (players, coaches, executives, etc.), it probably doesn't matter. Perhaps I'm overly cynical, but they really don't seem to care at all about domestic violence-type situations. In fact, I would say the same is true for all sports. After all, Brett Myers is currently in the World Series.

Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
by Harris :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 1:06pm

The Giants are missing three starters on defense, Bradshaw and Jacobs are hobbled and Manningham might not play. In theory, the Eagles should win easily if, IF, Donovan McNabb's evil twin Seamus has ended his annual visit. I hate Seamus.

Hail Hydra!

Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
by CathyW :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 3:06pm

"In theory" being the operative words. I never count the Giants out until the clock hits all zeros and the game is over. They're sneaky that way.

Is this the first time since week 2 that there's no obvious blowout (mainly because Detriot and St. Louis play each other), or are we counting on SF to be destroyed by Indy?

14
Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
by Big-Hairy-Andy :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 1:23pm

My completely subjective thinking has homefield balance that out significantly.

Granted, it also has Carolina run the ball on every offensive play and Jake Delhomme only fumble the snap three times.

357
Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
by Big-Hairy-Andy :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 6:45pm

Okay, so I totally blew the homefield call. I was sure they were playing at Carolina.

Still, seems something balanced it out regardless.

Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread

Just realised with Big Ben on bye, I have a choice between Hasselbeck, Bulger, and Culpepper to QB my fantasy team this week... I'm doomed. Kill me now.

...any tips?

19
Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
by B :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 1:41pm

Based on the fact that the Rams are playing the Lions, I'd start Bulger. Unless he's hurt.

21
Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
by Big-Hairy-Andy :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 1:46pm

Thanks B. Bulger's apparently okay - at least until the game starts. Just discovered Stafford's in for the Lions anyway, which makes that simpler.

20
Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
by The Guy You Don't Want to Hear (not verified) :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 1:43pm

Go back to 2004?

In seriousness, I would go with Bulger just because he's facing the worst pass defense of those three, but I think they'll all be about equal in the end.

22
Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
by Big-Hairy-Andy :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 1:48pm

24
Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
by The Guy You Don't Want to Hear (not verified) :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 1:50pm

I think you would have to be punished by the fantasy gods for having such a trio. Possibly by being forced to have them again 5 years later.

50
Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
by Big-Hairy-Andy :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 2:33pm

McNabb throws a TD to make me curse benching him in one fantasy league. Then they realize that if he had time to throw a 10-yard pass, Jason Peters must have been holding and sure enough, he was.

2 plays later they throw seemingly the exact same pass from 20 yards out and the Eagles are up 13-0.

Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
by Pat (filler) (not verified) :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 5:54pm

It was a 3rd and 1, and the Giants were clearly expecting an inside run, so Vick just took off and picked up the 1 on the edge. It might not seem exciting, but it's a solid 3rd and short play. And considering those haven't gone that well for the Eagles in recent years, that's cool by me.

If you're not watching the Stl/Det game, you're missing out on some real "football". 3rd and 10 on the StL 12 yard line, Stafford gets picked off for the lions in the end zone. The defender brings the ball out to about the 1 yard line, then trying to make a play, he goes back into the end zone, and gets tackled for a Safety. The Lions are finally on the board.

Bad Orton. The only positive thing he has produced was the slowest 10-yard-scramble you'll see this week. The Denver offense is DEAD so far.

Also Ed Reed made a highlight reel hit on Moreno, who fumbled on the play. Slow developing screens will get your reciever killed... by Ed...

It seems every year they lose a couple of games that make them look like crap against pathetic opponents and then they suddenly show up and dominate against a tough opponent. Maybe they really just don't try during those bad games.

49ers v.Colts
by TLivingston :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 3:47pm

The 49ers could actually be up more than 14-9 at the half.

For whatever reason, Mike Singletary and Jimmy Raye still want to establish the run, but the run game outside of that long TD run from Gore (where the Colts didn't tackle well at all) has been pedestrian. When they spread it out a bit, they're much more successful. Smith's arm is fine and now that he has Vernon Davis playing at an All-Pro level along with Crabtree's emergence, they need to exploit that a lot more than banging Gore up as much as they have.

Meanwhile, Manning's been having trouble reading some of these blitz coverages, but the problem is that he's leaving a lot of balls up high or long for his receivers. 49ers are doing a good job of mixing him up, though, as they haven't allowed a big play all game. Bend but don't break seems to be working.

Re: 49ers v.Colts

I think their charts must say "up by 6 is better than up by 5": Miami chose to try for 13 rather than 12, right after Indy chose to try for 6 rather than 5. Both failed, unfortunately.

Interesting to be able to hear the umpire during the Colts game.
During the 2PC, while Manning was calling signals, you could hear the linebacker saying, "Excuse me! Move! Move!" to the ump. Then the ump said, "Where are you going?" The linebacker replied, "That way!"

It seems to me like something's wrong there. The LB was spending too much time talking to somebody behind him seconds before the snap. Is that the LB's fault or the ump's?

Do you think that happens a lot? I've never been able to hear it before.

Walt Coleman's crew in the Baltimore-Denver game is terrible. I'm not sure what is going on, and I'm not a Raven's fan, but this is ridiculous. I'm not sure whether it is Coleman or just one or more of the refs, but there have been several totally bogus calls coming from the wrong refs, all the way across the field and way after the play is over. There is at least one ref who needs to be suspended and investigated after this game.

He was visibly screaming at his team in the middle of the 3rd quarter to hurry up. The announcers complained that he wasn't making his team hurry up (as he was doing this screaming on-screen). Now late they're complaining about how he waited far too long before doing that.

249
Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
by Theo :: Sun, 11/01/2009 - 5:08pm

That could be, but if he was in a hurry, then why was he calling a FG in the 2nd half? Why the screen passes and running plays?

Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread

I actually think that he was just thinking, "Maybe we can get it together and come back" and screaming then and then when the team didn't respond and couldn't move the ball he gave up and just went through the motions of saying he wanted to hurry. I didn't see him do it in between the middle of the third and the end of the 4th, so he may not have been at all in that time.
