I have faith that LeBeau will call a game that will shut down the Packers for most the game.

This is a really easy pick for me, Green Bay all the way!!
With the Steelers Center injured, thats going to be huge! I know Donald Driver is probable but thats probable and will apear in some part of the game and so will Clifton if he some how doesn't start tomorrow's game.
Big Ben's Passer Rating isn't as big as he is, of 75.5 and Rodger's Passer rating of 109.2!
In this postseason the Steeler's has only beat the Packer's in two areas:
Passing: Packers-1st, Steelers- 10th
Rushing: Packers-1st, Steelers-3rd
Recieving: Packers-1st, 5th, 9th, 15th before Steelers-16th
Scoring: Packers and Steelers are tied for 1st
Returing: Packers-7th, Steelers-4th
Kicking: Packers and Steelers are tied for 5th
Punting: Packers- 3rd and Steelers- 6th
Defense: Packers- 5th and Steelers- 4th
Total Offense: Green Bay 1st, Steelers 5th
Passing Offense: Green Bay 1st, Steelers 7th
Rushing Offense: Green Bay 2nd, Steelers 4th
Recieving Offense: Green Bay 1st, Steelers 5th
First Downs: Green Bay 1st, Steelers 3rd
3rd Down Conversions: Green Bay 2nd, Steelers 4th
4th Down Conversions: Green Bay tied for 7th, Steelers tied for 3rd
(Only because Green Bay hasn't had to go for 4th Downs, just saying)
Total Defense: Green Bay 28, Steelers 31 (Regular Season)
Don't want to do all the stats for Defense, too many!
When Packers came off of a 2 week resting spot they beat the Vikings 31-3, After the Steelers came off of a bye they played against a much easier team and won by less points 28-10
With Woodson, Clifton, Matthews, Driver, Nelson, Rodgers, B.J. "the Freezer" Raji and after watching the last few weeks I have to give some credit to Hawk, this team is going to be unstoppable!
As you can see from all of these stats (came from ESPN.com) which team is a better team in this Super Bowl match-up! My prediction is obviously for the Packers 28-27! The only reason why im putting this game as close as it is, is because the Packers haven't been doing so well in the 4th quarter!
Im not saying that the Steelers are a bad team but there is no way with a passer rating as that low and Clay Matthews and Chad Clifton and your Center, your not going to win the Super Bowl, in my opionion!

As Roger notes, it looks like you're comparing total playoff production when GB has a 3 games to 2 games edge. Even with the rate stats, I don't think looking only at playoff games is a good idea. The sample size is too small and the opposition is too good. (I think a low passer rating against BAL and NYJ can be expected.) I do agree that the loss of Pouncey has a big impact, probably in the basic formations and strategy the Steelers will employ on offense.

Here's something I noticed back in week 17 that hasn't failed me yet. (We'll see if the Packers have fixed it.)
When Green Bay lines up in an offset I with 3 wide receivers, and the tight end motions across the formation right before the snap, it's ALWAYS a play action pass.

NY Times has a recap. Ah, who doesn't love a bit of schadenfreude? I feel terrible for the fans who spent thousands of dollars to not watch the Super Bowl, but Jerry Jones falling flat on his face? Priceless.
Looking back, do you think Nelson deserves the MVP more than Rodgers? Or perhaps Jennings more? I figured that Rodgers won MVP more or less by default, because there was no single player who stood out, so might as well give it to the QB, who did have a pretty good game.
I think Nelson would have a good case if not for those big couple of drops. He put up excellent numbers, but it did take him 15 targets to get there. Still though, considering the game Rodgers put up under extreme pressure with very little help from the running game (and considering his numbers would also have looked better if Nelson had caught those balls), I think he earned his award.
Yes, we have to keep in mind that if Nelson and Jones catch the balls that hit them in the hands Rodgers probably finishes with 400 yards and 4, maybe even 5 TDs.
It would be hard for Nelson to elevate to MVP calibre numbers without Rodgers' case for MVP not getting even stronger.

by scottybsun (not verified) :: Sun, 02/06/2011 - 8:13pm
Two big "hidden plays" so far:
- Steelers throwing deep on 3rd and 2 instead of running with the very effective Mendenhall. Led to punt
- Penalty on kickoff return, putting Pitt back at its 7
by ebongreen (not verified) :: Sun, 02/06/2011 - 8:19pm
Other than a Roethlisberger scramble, I have a hard time imagining how things could realistically have gone better for the Packers or worse for the Steelers in the first quarter.
by Bucephalus (not verified) :: Sun, 02/06/2011 - 8:40pm
You are certainly not. If they didn't try so hard, they might be better. But I have a hard time comprehending how someone could watch the game "for the commercials."
by Jon Silverberg (not verified) :: Mon, 02/07/2011 - 9:00pm
No...they just thought they were OK at the position and he was no better than the guys in front of him...they needed to cut someone...like Woodhead... the Jets had lots of positions where the backups and the backups to the backups were all about the same quality...every time they had an injury, whoever filled in was acceptable...that's how they could play so many DB's against the Patriots in the playoff game, too...they were a very deep team...their cuts played for other teams, and more than just GB and NE...
Given the state of the GB secondary, it's good the length of a typical SB halftime runs at least a half hour. Plus, GB gets the ball first unless Pittsburgh tries an onside kick. That couldn't happen two years in a row, could it.
Frankly, if both are lost for the game, I don't see any way GB can win. Pitt will score every single time. Even if one of Shields/Woodson comes back, it's going to be tough for GB to stop them.
I'm not feeling good about GB's chances at all right now.
Up by 11 at the half and getting the ball first in the second half against a team QB playing a hurt QB and missing its third receiver and second CB, and you don't like their chances?
No, I don't. Bush made a nice play while in safety-type coverage, but he is a terrible, terrible coverage guy. Pat Lee, obviously, is no better. There's a good chance the defense will crumble as they did last year against Pittsburgh.
by bigtencrazy (not verified) :: Sun, 02/06/2011 - 9:12pm
I don't know what will be more annoying. Pittsburgh winning or Steeler fans complaining of the media discussing the GB injuries and the role that played on the Steelers winning the game.
oh god why am i watching this please kill me now i'd change the halftime show to something else but i can't believe it's actually this horrible i'd like to die now
Every successful Pittsburgh run is a run inside that gets bounced outside. Runs to the outside against Green Bay's defense, I swear I read that somewhere...
by ebongreen (not verified) :: Sun, 02/06/2011 - 10:02pm
I swear, Frank Zombo getting a sack off Flozell Adams should embarrass the big man. FZ looked shocked to see Ben still standing there with the ball in his hands, and Adams didn't even try to catch up.
He ain't Clay Matthews, big man. Pick him up! (And I say this as a Packer fan.
The non down by contact seems clear to me. I'm not sure about the control and fumble vs no control part. But say it's a fumble. They blew it dead and anything after the whistle is a non-play. How do you determine who gets the ball?
Common sense tells me that should be a catch and fumble. My understanding of the rules are that it's incomplete. As Calvin Johnson will confirm, common sense is worthless in interpreting the NFL rulebook.
Explain how your understanding of the rules means that wasn't a catch. What about the "football move" language? Didn't we just witness a catch and a football move?
That is correct. There is no longer "football move" in the rules. they now have to hold onto the ball long enough to establish possession. Whatever that means.
So. Since Pittsburgh's been down 21-3, 6 penalties on Packers. Zero on the Steelers. Every close call has gone Pittsburgh's way. The NFL just can't help itself.
If all the calls are on the Packers, than of course the close calls will favor the Steelers.
The problem with the statement, though, is it implies that the Steelers "comeback" was caused by the refs, and not by the Packers imploding.
Do you understand the difference between "every close call has gone Pittsburgh's way" and "every call that has gone Pittsburgh's way was a close call?"
And now, on the second punt because of penalty, Swain gets obviously held in the replay. It's a flag even if it's not effective. How much do money do the refs have on Pitt anyway?
I have to confess, that even though he got on my nerves, I found myself missing
him today. I hope that they are successful in defibrillating him after this
meltdown.
by The Powers That Be :: Sun, 02/06/2011 - 10:30pm
I think Nelson's trying hard to be MVP. He has to (a) have really great numbers, and (b) keep Rodgers from having really great numbers. It's quite the balancing act.
Yeah. I went back and looked at the replay to make sure. It was a blatant wrestling take down from behind to save your quarterback kind of penalty. I have no idea how Troy Aikman didn't see it.
I totally believe it. The Steelers o-line holding isn't a surprise. I was just thinking that when I thought the play Troy and the replay highlighted was the call, I didn't see it.
Yeah, I like how Joe and Troy explained that the refs must have gotten the uniform number wrong and then proceeded to show us something other than the penalty that had been whistled.
Now the part that worries me is that we're going to hear about Rodgers's predecessor all offseason. Well, until people finally start realizing that there's going to be no football next year.
He's one of football's all-time great quarterbacks. I can understand frustration at the rather graceless way he's leaving the league, but I think he earned more from Green Bay fans than to be mocked and then forgotten.
Fans of other teams should absolutely mock him, though...
What happened to the Steelers at the end? They looked totally lost. Ben Rothisburger needed to get his team on the same page. You can't have receivers not knowing the play in a two minute offense.
They imploded on a few plays and then Tramon Williams made a good play at the end. The MVP should be Tramon Williams. He figured out on the opening drive that the refs were going to allow a lot of contact, and he just proceeded to maul wide receivers for the next four quarters.
Didn't Pitt have a timeout left before that 4th down? They should have used it; when players come out of the huddle confused and lining up in the wrong places, that's a sign that the play probably isn't going to work.
by ebongreen (not verified) :: Sun, 02/06/2011 - 11:13pm
That was mostly a good game.
I wish there would have been fewer injuries, and I don't think the Steelers played particularly well overall. I look forward to seeing what DVOA has to say in that respect, but I think it could have been a much better game.
Best of luck to everyone next year, and thank you to all the hard work that goes into making FO a great site.
Totally. That being said, the Super Bowl MVP is the "Winning QB Unless Somebody Has A Really Exceptional Game" award.
Jordy Nelson should be glad he didn't catch that last TD and possibly win the MVP, as he'd have almost invariably wound up having to play for the Raiders.
by snik75 (not verified) :: Sun, 02/06/2011 - 11:52pm
I will confess that the "QB on the winning team gets MVP unless he REALLY stinks or someone else has a monster game" is pretty lame, but does anyone really think Aaron Rodgers didn't deserve it? He only made a few bad throws that I saw, and Pitt was carving up the GB defense for series at a time. Tramon Williams didn't even get one of the picks, and he probably would have needed 2 with a TD to get an MVP.
by Ender (not verified) :: Tue, 02/08/2011 - 11:53am
He was almost perfect, it was exceptional. He just happened to have a lot of big drops so the stats don't look exceptional. One of the better overall super bowl performances by a QB.
by Independent George :: Mon, 02/07/2011 - 11:14am
I agree that Rodgers is a good pick, but Matt Snell, Reggie White, and Justin Tuck were all snubbed in favor of more high-profile players. Football writers don't necessarily know football better than some fans.
by Tom W (not verified) :: Mon, 02/07/2011 - 12:10am
To Brett, Chili, Ziggy, Tony Kornheiser, Skip Brainless, and all the rest (you know who you are): smooches. To the Steelers' fans and organization: congrats on another fine season. I suspect this won't be the last time these two teams meet in a Super Bowl.
by Billy B (not verified) :: Mon, 02/07/2011 - 12:37am
Congrats to the Packers and Aaron Rodgers, both very deserving. Rodgers' quick release and accuracy was tremendous. People will blame Roethlisberger and Mendenhall for the three turnovers, but I thought that all 3 turnovers were the result of great defensive plays. Just a great game by the Packers. Congrats. (from a lifelong Steelers fan)
The worst part about the game was the fact that Troy Aikman was calling it. Nobody can make an exciting game sound boring like Aikman. By the way he was talking about the game, you would have thought the Steelers were winning the whole time! After halftime when he was talking about what needs to happen in the second half, he spent (literally) the entire time talking about the Steelers, as if the Packers weren't even there, never mind the inconvenient fact that they were up 21-10! I find Aikman unbearable. When Hines Ward makes a nice play, Aikman gushes, "he's been excellent all night, really dominating!" When Jordy Nelson makes a nice play, Aikman says, "he's had a busy night."
Fox's coverage of the game was terrible. Their slow-motion replays added no useful information, and the shots they chose were mostly random and uninteresting. They almost never showed Mike McCarthy (probably because he's not so good looking, to put it nicely), and every time they showed Aaron Rodgers they made sure his face took up only a tiny portion of the screen.
Perhaps I'm spoiled by the superb coverage they do over at NBC, but Fox looks like a bunch of amateurs, and extremely biased amateurs at that.
by Keith(1) (not verified) :: Mon, 02/07/2011 - 4:47am
A few comments about the game and my experience:
I think Rodgers played both better and worse than his final numbers indicate, looking lost and unstoppable at different stretches of the game. However, if anybody has a suggestion for a better MVP, I would consider your argument. Though, in this game, I am not sure if there is one.
If the Steelers won, literally nobody from their team seemed very "MVP-like," so I could have seen any number of non-Ben candidates winning. If Ben won, I would have given up football altogether.
When that facemask happened, all of the Steelers fans in the area yelled "Good flag." They all then proceeded to blow vuvuzelas and various airhorns. They also spent most of the first half blowing these objects in the ears of the Packers fans, and cheering when the entire Packers secondary got hurt.
If anybody calls this a sloppy game, I am not sure why. Since I have already seen that, I pose the following: WTF?
Tramon Williams is an amazing player, but we all knew that. Dom Capers is an amazing coordinator, and most of us knew that. Other than a brief stretch in the third quarter, neither of them showed weakness.
My employer is HQed in Pittsburgh so I have been to many Pirates, Steelers and Penguins games and I've found Pittsburgh sports fans to be extremely polar in their behavior...either disarmingly nice, hospitable and friendly or complete bastards.
Weird phenomenon that other non-Pitt based co-workers have also noticed.

5ast 5ive: The 5ast and the Five-ious.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Jordy Nelson has officially scored the first touchdown of Super Bowl XLV.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I know there was a penalty, but goodness is the GB kick coverage just terrible.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Harrison Ford is old as dirt. He should not be in action movies. Stop the madness!
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Jordy Nelson was 30-1 for MVP.
I have now seen a commercial for Cowboys & Aliens and seen the trailer three times. I still don't believe it.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Looking back, do you think Nelson deserves the MVP more than Rodgers? Or perhaps Jennings more? I figured that Rodgers won MVP more or less by default, because there was no single player who stood out, so might as well give it to the QB, who did have a pretty good game.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I think Nelson would have a good case if not for those big couple of drops. He put up excellent numbers, but it did take him 15 targets to get there. Still though, considering the game Rodgers put up under extreme pressure with very little help from the running game (and considering his numbers would also have looked better if Nelson had caught those balls), I think he earned his award.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Yes, we have to keep in mind that if Nelson and Jones catch the balls that hit them in the hands Rodgers probably finishes with 400 yards and 4, maybe even 5 TDs.
It would be hard for Nelson to elevate to MVP calibre numbers without Rodgers' case for MVP not getting even stronger.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
My Darling Clementine, Red River, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Once Upon a Time in the West...now this...we're going backwards...
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Wow... that pick 6 was just all on Pouncey.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Huh?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Yeah... I got the wrong lineman there.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Beautiful return on the pick-six!
Get ready to cry in those Terrible Towels!
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Howard Green! Wow, never would have thunk that.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I still can't get over the Jets cutting Green 4 days before playing GB, and the Pack having a zillion injuries on the DL right then...Green was a major part of the Jets loss that week...talk about bad timing...great for Green, tho...
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Wouldn't Ice T have been a more logical choice to promote that beverage?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Two big "hidden plays" so far:
- Steelers throwing deep on 3rd and 2 instead of running with the very effective Mendenhall. Led to punt
- Penalty on kickoff return, putting Pitt back at its 7
ref karma seattle fans???
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Actually, it would be proof of more pwnage of the 'Hawks by the Packers if they're the benificiaries of said "karma".
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Nice "My knee hurts, theres no way I'm running the ball"-bluff there, Ben :D
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Radio says Ben tripped on seam in artificial turf. Jerry Jones probably told FOX not to show a replay.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Other than a Roethlisberger scramble, I have a hard time imagining how things could realistically have gone better for the Packers or worse for the Steelers in the first quarter.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
and just think they were THIS close to recovering a muffed punt early on.
BTW- REALLY good tackling by GB
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Generous spot for Sanders on the 1st down there. Sure looked to me like he ran all the way back across the 1st-down line before being touched.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
GB has been tackling really well so far.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I so love getting to watch a truly great cornerback play.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
The most graceful part of the game. The combination of elegance and brutality is part of what makes this game so great.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Teleflora winning best commercial so far.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I also liked the Doritos pug and resurrected grandpa ones. I do not need to see the Budweiser "Tiny Dancer" ad ever again.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Nice tackling by Pittsburgh too.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
So far, Coke over Pepsi.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
The Darth Vader VW ad was the biggest "That was it?" of the commercials so far.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
The longer version on-line was better
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
That was not a hold by Heath Miller. Ref just threw the flag because the defender fell down.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
He tackled Matthews. That's a flag every time.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
He pushed Matthews in his chest. That's never supposed to a penalty
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Am I really the only person who thinks that the Super Bowl commercials are the most overrated thing in history?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
You are certainly not. If they didn't try so hard, they might be better. But I have a hard time comprehending how someone could watch the game "for the commercials."
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
+1
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Forcing GB to put Bush on the field is definitely a good idea for PIttsburgh.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I would tend to agree, but both teams seem like they're running out of wide receivers.
That's gonna favor Pittsburgh.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Maybe not.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Or not. Bush gets a nice pick there!
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I think it would be great if this thread was about football not commericals. Just my opinion.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Holy crap! Howard Green and Freakin Jaret Bush. Seriously, who would have thought!
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
FWIW, Green's been pretty good for the Packers. Was he that bad for the Jets?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
No...they just thought they were OK at the position and he was no better than the guys in front of him...they needed to cut someone...like Woodhead... the Jets had lots of positions where the backups and the backups to the backups were all about the same quality...every time they had an injury, whoever filled in was acceptable...that's how they could play so many DB's against the Patriots in the playoff game, too...they were a very deep team...their cuts played for other teams, and more than just GB and NE...
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
And that is why Starks is playing. Brandon Jackson simply can't do that.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Christ that window was tiny.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Yep. He's been doing that a lot this year - like in the Atlanta game, and at home on a TD for Finley vs. Detroit. Absurdly good ball placement.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Jennings with some early hubris
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Steelers' D needs to even up the turnovers if they want to crawl back into this.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Wow, Shields gambles and misses, and now he's hurt. That is REALLY REALLY bad for GB.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Carmax just won the Super Bowl.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
What the hell did Jerry Jones put underneath the turf?? At this rate, somebody is playing both ways by the end of the game.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Cement. Somebody told him if neither team has enough players to finish the game, the Cowboys win by default.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Well, if Pittsburgh doesn't get a TD here, there's something seriously wrong. GB is currently decimated in the secondary.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Thirty-one points in the first half. Both teams may be over 200 yards by the time the half ends. Some defensive battle.
And with GB losing their entire defensive backfield, the second half could have even more.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
If the Packers continue losing DBs, yes, we go back to the '09 shootout. That would be an odd (and frankly, undesirable) second half, IMO.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
It's disappointing that the game won't be won straight up and instead it's a battle of attrition.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Wooo, touchdown. Did I mention I have steelers 0 and Packers 1 in my super bowl pool?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Somebody tell me when halftime is over, please.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Given the state of the GB secondary, it's good the length of a typical SB halftime runs at least a half hour. Plus, GB gets the ball first unless Pittsburgh tries an onside kick. That couldn't happen two years in a row, could it.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Frankly, if both are lost for the game, I don't see any way GB can win. Pitt will score every single time. Even if one of Shields/Woodson comes back, it's going to be tough for GB to stop them.
I'm not feeling good about GB's chances at all right now.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Up by 11 at the half and getting the ball first in the second half against a team QB playing a hurt QB and missing its third receiver and second CB, and you don't like their chances?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
No, I don't. Bush made a nice play while in safety-type coverage, but he is a terrible, terrible coverage guy. Pat Lee, obviously, is no better. There's a good chance the defense will crumble as they did last year against Pittsburgh.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Pittsburgh looks terrible.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I don't know what will be more annoying. Pittsburgh winning or Steeler fans complaining of the media discussing the GB injuries and the role that played on the Steelers winning the game.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Either way, the Steelers fans will be annoying, so I'll go with choice A being the most annoying.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
oh god why am i watching this please kill me now i'd change the halftime show to something else but i can't believe it's actually this horrible i'd like to die now
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Because Axl Rose will be so P.O.'ed Slash and Fergie did "Sweet Child of Mine", I'm glad I watched.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Fergie made Axl Rose's voice sound good by comparison.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
We watched 4 seconds of it before changing the channel again and no. She doesn't.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
So what point will we get top frontal nudity in a SB halftime show?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Seven years ago.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
This halftime show is so much better while muted.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Man, this halftime show is a train wreck.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
And now they're doing a Dirty Dancing song? Are they trying to piss of Patrick Swayze's ghost??
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Unperformerlike conduct
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Emcee Sage Francis on Facebook: "Dear Black Eyed Peas,
you can get 200 people to do the running man, but you can't choreograph a soul into your body."
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I actually thought that was pretty enjoyable, as halftime shows go, except that the sound levels seemed completely messed up.
My 11-year-old son tells me that the Dirty Dancing song is really popular right now (I'm guessing some new version, but I don't know).
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
If not for GB injuries in the secondary, how much of a rout would this be right now? (IMO: a pretty big one.)
If the wounded for GB don't return, how much of a track meet is this going to become? (Quite possibly a very high-scoring one.)
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Word is Shields has his pads on and looks like he's going to give it a go. No word on Woodson yet.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I'm impressed with myself. I did not turn the tv back on too early and end up having to see a few seconds of halftime.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Emmanuel Sanders is apparently out for the game.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Woodson out. Wow. That is just a huge, huge blow.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Newsflash!
Packers called for a penalty!
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Just a huge third down here.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
And Jones drops a TD...... It's going to be a four point game soon.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Gah. And Gah! again for the faux-penalty.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Wouldn't feel right without a Jones-drop.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Wow... phantom facemask.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Looks like the refs are trying to guarantee a competitive game regardless of reality.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
and a phantom facemask penalty.........
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
James Jones has no shame.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I guess that at halftime they told the officials to get to work.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I don't understand how a ref can call facemask unless he actually sees a facemask being grabbed. And I"m a Steelers fan.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Steelers fans will not be permitted to complain about officiating if they lose.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Woodson probably makes that play if he's blitzing and not Bush.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Shit through a tin horn.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Now with a deuce the game is a push and the bookies go nuts.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Never mind. </Litella>
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Steelers are going to be up three soon......
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Belivers in momentum can go ahead and pick the Steelers.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
All you have to believe is No Woodson, No Shields = TD every time.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Big Ben is about to become as good a QB as Brady after he wins this Super Bowl.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Is it just me, or was that Groupon commercial in really bad taste?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Not just you, believe me. "Wildly tone-dea" would be one way to describe it.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Really bad taste. Up next a Javanese restaurant commercial featuring a tsunami.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Rodgers is getting no help whatsoever.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Every successful Pittsburgh run is a run inside that gets bounced outside. Runs to the outside against Green Bay's defense, I swear I read that somewhere...
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Woodson would normally be there making that play where Moore bounced it outside.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Yes, an important point.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
GB must score on this possession.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
There's the stop the Packers' D needed to get. Now Rodgers has to go into score-fest mode. It's there if the wideouts can make the plays.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I swear, Frank Zombo getting a sack off Flozell Adams should embarrass the big man. FZ looked shocked to see Ben still standing there with the ball in his hands, and Adams didn't even try to catch up.
He ain't Clay Matthews, big man. Pick him up! (And I say this as a Packer fan.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
That was a coverage sack.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
WHY does GB run the stretch zone to the play to the short side of field? It loses yardage so often......
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Why wasn't that a penalty? He chucked the guy while the ball was in the air.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
The steelers are backing off - makes it a lot harder to complete those short passes.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
GB is just imploding.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Bad by Williams, but it should seriously be illegal for the kicking team to force a player into the ball on a punt.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I was upset with Williams for even being within 15 yards of the ball. GET AWAY FROM IT!!!!!!
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Total BS call. You don't call that in the Super Bowl. Unless it's Pittsburgh or the Steelers.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
They should challenge that. Pack receiver down by contact
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Every call for Pittsburgh this half. Anyone surprised?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
This would be a terrible challenge. That wasn't a catch.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
It's not a real Packers game until McCarthy makes a questionable challenge.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
They are not going to win this challenge.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
The non down by contact seems clear to me. I'm not sure about the control and fumble vs no control part. But say it's a fumble. They blew it dead and anything after the whistle is a non-play. How do you determine who gets the ball?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Has he ever disagreed with the officials over a close call?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Yes, but it is a rarity.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Periera is a complete idiot. He didn't have it long enough? Really? Because the rule is you have to have the ball for exactly how long?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Hmm, maybe the officials will overrule a Steelers-friendly call in the second half of a close...no, I can't keep a straight face.
(For the record, I accept that it wasn't a catch).
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Receiver caught the ball and turned before he was touched by any defender.
I'm just not seeing how this can be called a non-catch. The referees are not even explaining their logic.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Wow. The refs just screwed over the Packers on the no-catch ruling.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I disagree. I don't like the rule either, but they've been calling that incomplete all year. At least they're consistent.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Pittsburgh fans have nothing to compalain about with the officiating.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
They will anyway.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
He caught it, turned upfield and then it came loose. Remember the 'football move' rule? The NFL doesn't have a clue what a complete pass is anymore.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Common sense tells me that should be a catch and fumble. My understanding of the rules are that it's incomplete. As Calvin Johnson will confirm, common sense is worthless in interpreting the NFL rulebook.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Explain how your understanding of the rules means that wasn't a catch. What about the "football move" language? Didn't we just witness a catch and a football move?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I thought they got rid of the football move language, or that it was never part of the rules.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
That is correct. There is no longer "football move" in the rules. they now have to hold onto the ball long enough to establish possession. Whatever that means.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Come on guys they've been calling those incomplete all year. Stupid rule, but it's consistent.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
So. Since Pittsburgh's been down 21-3, 6 penalties on Packers. Zero on the Steelers. Every close call has gone Pittsburgh's way. The NFL just can't help itself.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Seriously, just shut up with your stupid conspiracy theories. I'm a Packer fan and I want you to just shut the hell up already.
It's stupid. Stop.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Slapping a player in the head is a close call? Ineligible player downfield is a close call?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
He didn't say "every penalty was a close call." He said, "no penalties called on the Steelers, AND every close call favors the Steelers."
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
If all the calls are on the Packers, than of course the close calls will favor the Steelers.
The problem with the statement, though, is it implies that the Steelers "comeback" was caused by the refs, and not by the Packers imploding.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
The facemask was a blown call.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Do you understand the difference between "every close call has gone Pittsburgh's way" and "every call that has gone Pittsburgh's way was a close call?"
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I'm just questioning the premise that mental error penalties must be even among teams.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Are you totally drunk? Let me refer to the term 'and'. It's very complicated. Look it up.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
And now, on the second punt because of penalty, Swain gets obviously held in the replay. It's a flag even if it's not effective. How much do money do the refs have on Pitt anyway?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
That might be a game-saver for the Packers right there.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Nice recovery by the Packers. Can't flag that!
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
...wondering whatever happened to that FireOmarTomlin guy. Haven't heard from him in a couple weeks.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Didn't he get banned a few weeks ago?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Yes.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Did he? I didn't notice. Wouldn't be surprised.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
On 01/15/2011, at 4:53 PM.
Bill Barnwell temporarily became the most popular person at FO.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I have to confess, that even though he got on my nerves, I found myself missing
him today. I hope that they are successful in defibrillating him after this
meltdown.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Again Nelson follows a drop with a redeeming big play!
Not a bad ratio, actually.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I think Nelson's trying hard to be MVP. He has to (a) have really great numbers, and (b) keep Rodgers from having really great numbers. It's quite the balancing act.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Hines Ward's sabotaging of Roethlisberger in Super Bowl XL has been largely forgotten.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Huuuuge score!
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Come on GB! Just hold on.............
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Again, the difference between Bush and Woodson. He could make that tackle on Wallace.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I guess Flo's hold was too blatant not to call. As a Cowboy fan, I appreciate the flashback.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Ummm. That wasn't the hold they called, Troy.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Oh it wasn't? I was thinking that phantom hold on Adams made up for the facemask. Too bad the replay guy was listening to Troy and not the ref.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Well I saw a Packer pass rusher pulled to the ground from behind. It seemed flag-worthy.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Yeah. I went back and looked at the replay to make sure. It was a blatant wrestling take down from behind to save your quarterback kind of penalty. I have no idea how Troy Aikman didn't see it.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I totally believe it. The Steelers o-line holding isn't a surprise. I was just thinking that when I thought the play Troy and the replay highlighted was the call, I didn't see it.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Yeah, I like how Joe and Troy explained that the refs must have gotten the uniform number wrong and then proceeded to show us something other than the penalty that had been whistled.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
GB looked so confused on that conversion.
OK Rodgers, go make your legacy.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
All the Steelers' PATs are scored by former Redskins.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
House wins best ad.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
If the Packers lose this due to more injuries in a year of injuries, after getting three turnovers so far, I'm going to be very disappointed.
I don't think DVOA is going to be very kind to either team.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Huge third down conversion. They need a TD. I don't think the GB defense can hold.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Steelers safety caught going for the pick instead of covering Jennings. Huge for the Pack.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Jennings is just a beast. I wonder, would Driver have had all Nelsons yards if he was in there?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Come on GB. You need this TD.....
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
They really did. I don't see the Packers winning this one now. Hope I'm wrong.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Nelson had an MVP in his hands that time
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Should you go for it there?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
This is shaping up to end just like the game last year.......... I'm a wreck.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
No miracle this year!
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Is that really it? Really?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
6-seeds are now 2-0 in the Super Bowl.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Congrats to the Packers.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
YES!
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Gratz to the Pack.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
YES! Brett WHO?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I don't recall his name coming up all broadcast. So much for the over on that bet.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Congrats to the Packers and their fans. Heckuva draining game.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Now the part that worries me is that we're going to hear about Rodgers's predecessor all offseason. Well, until people finally start realizing that there's going to be no football next year.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I didn't hear the name "Favre" once during the game.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Who?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I think he's referring to Brett Favre, former quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Oh, yeah. He won a Super Bowl, didn't he?
...Once.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
He's one of football's all-time great quarterbacks. I can understand frustration at the rather graceless way he's leaving the league, but I think he earned more from Green Bay fans than to be mocked and then forgotten.
Fans of other teams should absolutely mock him, though...
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
But Packer fans knew three years ago what everyone else knows now. He's also one of football's all-time great douchebags.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Didn't FOA pick GB?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Baltimore.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
They picked GB to win the NFC, FWIW.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
What happened to the Steelers at the end? They looked totally lost. Ben Rothisburger needed to get his team on the same page. You can't have receivers not knowing the play in a two minute offense.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
They imploded on a few plays and then Tramon Williams made a good play at the end. The MVP should be Tramon Williams. He figured out on the opening drive that the refs were going to allow a lot of contact, and he just proceeded to maul wide receivers for the next four quarters.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
OH MY GOD IT WUZ TEH REFS
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Didn't Pitt have a timeout left before that 4th down? They should have used it; when players come out of the huddle confused and lining up in the wrong places, that's a sign that the play probably isn't going to work.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Wallace was confused on the third down play, not the fourth down play (lined up on the left side on fourth down, right side on third).
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
That was mostly a good game.
I wish there would have been fewer injuries, and I don't think the Steelers played particularly well overall. I look forward to seeing what DVOA has to say in that respect, but I think it could have been a much better game.
Best of luck to everyone next year, and thank you to all the hard work that goes into making FO a great site.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
My guess is DVOA gives a slight edge to the Steelers, as Green Bay recovered both fumbles, and got a touchdown off an Int return.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Congratulations to the Packers and their fans.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Heh. Twitter is listing trends that include:
#superbowl
#sb45
Bradley Cooper
Jordy Nelson
Greg Jennings
and Omar Epps.
Looks like the wider world has just discovered what FireOmarTomlin already knew.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I love how they have to have this pompous ceremony as though we don't all know it's going to be Rodgers who wins the MVP.
My vote would be Tramon Williams, but I think he has the same chance of winning the MVP that I do.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Real SuperBowl MVP: Ted Thompson.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Agreed re: the MVP award.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Gotta confess that I am surprised that the Packers won without getting to Ben more often.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Me too. I had considered putting money on Clay Matthews as MVP figuring the way they'd win was by sacking Rothlesberger.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I have spent a fair amount of time celebrating with family and friends.
And now I will smile at some fans located northwest of GB who are grinding their collective teeth
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
People in Howard and Suamico should be Packers fans.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I will confess that the "QB on the winning team gets MVP unless he REALLY stinks or someone else has a monster game" is pretty lame, but does anyone really think Aaron Rodgers didn't deserve it? He only made a few bad throws that I saw, and Pitt was carving up the GB defense for series at a time. Tramon Williams didn't even get one of the picks, and he probably would have needed 2 with a TD to get an MVP.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Sure, Rodgers had a good game, but it was more efficient than exceptional. It still feels like he won by default.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
If his receivers had helped him out a little he'd have thrown for over 400 yards.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
He was almost perfect, it was exceptional. He just happened to have a lot of big drops so the stats don't look exceptional. One of the better overall super bowl performances by a QB.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
I agree that Rodgers is a good pick, but Matt Snell, Reggie White, and Justin Tuck were all snubbed in favor of more high-profile players. Football writers don't necessarily know football better than some fans.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
To Brett, Chili, Ziggy, Tony Kornheiser, Skip Brainless, and all the rest (you know who you are): smooches. To the Steelers' fans and organization: congrats on another fine season. I suspect this won't be the last time these two teams meet in a Super Bowl.
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
So, how long until the 3-4 becomes the new Tampa-2 - the "new new thing", the defense that every owner wants his coaches to run?
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion

Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion
Congrats to the Packers and Aaron Rodgers, both very deserving. Rodgers' quick release and accuracy was tremendous. People will blame Roethlisberger and Mendenhall for the three turnovers, but I thought that all 3 turnovers were the result of great defensive plays. Just a great game by the Packers. Congrats. (from a lifelong Steelers fan)
Re: Super Bowl XLV Open Discussion

Stonehands. Nothing more.
